Illegal Soap Box Derby 2007 on Bernal Heights Hill

The annual Illegal Soap Box Derby 2007 takes place this Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! October 28th at 1pm on Bernal Heights Hill in San Francisco, where for over a decade daredevil racers have competed in makeshift vehicles. There will also be a Soapbox Derby Pre-Race Party on Saturday, October 27th at El Rio in San Francisco. Telstar Logistics has a great write-up on all of this weekend’s race action.

SFist: Baskets Are the New Minimalism

It’s a classic example of fixie bike lust: the carefully accented color coordination, expensive but mismatched wheels, improbably narrow handlebars, and, of course, lack of any unsightly “extras” such as gears and brakes. But wait...is that a basket we see?

Helvetica at YBCA Screening Room

Helvetica is a fascinating independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which celebrated it’s 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type. Helvetica encompasses the worlds of design, advertising, psychology, and communication, and invites us to take a second look at the thousands of words we see every day.
