Traditionally, a couple hasn't been inviting a stranger to wed them. Most commonly it was the pastor/minister/rabbi/what-have-you of the religious institution that both of you belonged to, probably the same guy who baptized you or whatever. It's only been in the last half century or so that marriages have significantly moved outside the home church.

I've had the honor of officiating two weddings in the last couple of years, and in one of the case the couple were people I'd known for a decade... and had actually coached through the process of hooking up. Being Reverend Patti at that one was especially wonderful.
True, I guess living in the yay area has colored my assumptions about what constitutes a “traditional” wedding. :)

The best thing about weddings is it's one of the times everybody gets to tell the truth and it's all good news.
