Sorry to hear about your rest stop experiences, but I would suggest to give Planet Ultra another chance. Most people working the ride are volunteers, not associated with Planet Ultra. While some riders/volunteers are super nice (like me), others are a bit odd...
No commitment means everybody is riding on their own, even though you might currently ride together. For example, if I would get a flat tire, you would not wait for me.
This assumes you care about the finishing time, which a lot of veterans do. As a rookie, you might perceive this as rude, but it is not, they will wait for you at the finish.
