2nd Annual Supermarket Street Sweep

Alleycat. Saturday, December 8. Race for food on your fixie/MTB/cruiser/junker/whatevs. Prizes for biggest turkey (or ham), specific items, and most food collected. All proceeds (and food) go to feed families over the holiday. I raced last year, and I’ll race again this year.

Much higher coordination of skills than Critical Mass, despite the [required] PBR fitted to your bottle cage.

Comfort Food, Nihonmachi Station

Sometimes a belly full of warm good is completely necessary. On a cold day after a visit to the deYoung or the Conservatory of Flowers, find your way to Nihonmachi (Japantown) on a pedestrian block of Buchanan between Post and Sutter streets to Tanpopo for a fill of the perfect ramen. The gamut of stock & noodles runs wide, from shoyu with fishcake to the surreal good pork Kyushu ramen. If your proclivities bend more towards udon, across the street in the Kintetsu mall you’ll find homemade udon & soba in Mifune’s rationalist black and red environs.

Putting the kawaii in yoshoku-ya, On the Bridge sits literally in the covered bridge over Webster street between the Kintetsu and the Kinokuniya buildings. Between the curries and hamburger dishes, crammed into the narrow slice between hallway and countertop, their east/west mashups like spaghetti with butter and tobiko make tummy happy. Seriously, you could spend a month eating through their weird menu of awesome.

On the other side of the bridge, next to Sophie’s Crepes lives Izumiya, probably the best place to find okonomiyaki in San Francisco. Paired with katsu curry, you’ll spend about ten bucks and be completely sated. Don’t come for the service or the ambiance, but do enjoy the crepes next door—just don’t take any photos. Sophie hates it. Instead, get goofy and snapped in the cluster of sticker booths next to the fountain at the bottom of the stairs.

Cooking has become one of my favorite single-tasking activities. Tonight I made risotto with peas, chicken katsu, and salad of baby spinach, red onion & pepper and avocado. And washed it down with a beer.

Just in case there was any question, my devotion to bacon is utter and complete. Bacon is a delicious, finicky but patient mistress, and she likes dressing up with everything.

Bacon (and some other stuff)

I was inspired by Kimmie's post about bacon. See, I love bacon perhaps more than life itself. There is no finer food than a piece or five of deliciously fried crispy pig.

Seasoning

My bacon of choice is Applegate Farms organic sunday bacon. In a pinch I'll pick up some from Niman Ranch (Safeway carries it). Best cooked on a well-seasoned cold iron skillet at medium-low heat.

Breakfast

Bacon (and some other stuff)

Mm, breakfast.

1 shallot
1 clove garlic
2 eggs
4 slices bacon
4 slices potato-rosemary bread
1 tbsp safflower or canola oil
1 tbsp olive oil
sea salt
pepper
pinch fresh dill

Place bacon in cold cast-iron pan, put on medium-low heat. Coat second pan with olive oil and start the bread on medium-low heat. Slice shallot & garlic and sautee for 2-3 minutes in safflower oil over medium-high heat. Whisk eggs with salt, pepper and a dash of water. Turn bacon & bread, pour eggs over shallots & garlic, and cook for 1-2 minutes until golden (not brown).

Turn off all heat, blot bacon and plate. Sprinkle dill over eggs and serve!
